About Shiva Cave:
The Shiva Cave (also known locally as Gogarbha Cave) is a natural cave formation located near Kudle Hill. It’s a quiet, lesser-known spiritual site dedicated to Lord Shiva. Inside the cave, there’s a Shiva Linga that is worshipped by locals and visitors alike.
The Tale Behind the Name
Locally known as Govina Kivi, which means “Cow’s Ear” in Kannada, the Shiva Cave takes its name from the town of Gokarna, . The cave features two entrances and consists of two main chambers — the main entrance hall and the serene Blue Chapel Chamber.
Legend has it that over a century ago, a hidden tunnel once connected this cave to Uttarkashi, a sacred town in northern India. Though the tunnel has long since been sealed off — likely due to changes in the landscape and climate — the myth continues to intrigue visitors.
Adding to its mystique, the cave offers one of the most stunning sunset views in Gokarna, making it a perfect blend of spirituality, history, and natural beauty.
What to Expect:
- Natural Ambience: It’s dark inside, so a torch or phone flashlight is recommended.
- Spiritual Vibe: People come here to meditate or offer prayers.
- Bats Inside: Due to the cave’s natural condition, bats are common—don’t be alarmed.
- Peaceful Spot: Unlike the busy beaches, this place offers a tranquil, secluded experience.
How to Reach:
From Kudle Beach: It’s a short 10–15 minute uphill walk behind the hill area.
From Gokarna Main Beach: Around 1.5–2 km via local roads or a short auto ride.
Tips:
- Carry a flashlight (it’s dark inside)
- Respect the space – it’s considered sacred.
- Avoid littering inside or near the cave.
