Introduction;

One of coastal Karnataka’s most fascinating historical sites is Mirjan Fort, which lies tucked away on the serene banks of the Aghanashini River. For those who enjoy history, architecture, and the outdoors, this centuries-old fort is a must-see. It is about 11.9 km from Kumta, around 22 km from Gokarna, 32 km from Honnavar, and roughly 57.5 km from Murudeshwar.

Mirjan Fort’s history;

Mirjan Fort’s history begins in the sixteenth century. It is thought to have been constructed during the more than 54-year rule of Queen Chennabhairadevi, popularly referred to as the Pepper Queen, who dominated the Saluva and Tuluva kingdoms. The fort served as a major hub for the export of spices, particularly pepper, to several countries.

Following her rule, the Bijapur Sultanate, the Marathas, and finally the British in 1784 took control of the fort. Mirjan Fort is a synthesis of several styles, with each age contributing its own architectural and cultural elements.
