Discover Yana Caves in Karnataka – a unique trekking spot near Kumta, Gokarna & Vibhooti Falls. Explore history, temple, routes & travel tips
One of Karnataka’s most intriguing natural wonders is the Yana Caves, which are tucked away in the thick forests of the Western Ghats. Trekkers, pilgrims, and environment lovers travel from all over India to Yana, which is well-known for its lush trekking trails, spiritual legends, and tall black rock formations. Yana, which is in the Uttara Kannada district, is a convenient weekend retreat because it is only 30 km from Kumta, 47 km from honavar, 50 km from Gokarna, 75 km from murdeshwar and 54 km from Sirsi.

The Iconic Rock Formations of Yana
Two enormous monoliths of limestone rock are located in the center of Yana:
The 390-foot-high Bhairaveshwara Shikhara
Mohini Shikhara, which is 300 feet high, is next to it.
These naturally occurring formations, which stand out against the verdant Sahyadri Hills, are composed of pure black karst limestone. Their unusual formations captivate geologists and photographers alike.
Yana is a place of adventure and spirituality since it has the Bhairaveshwara Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva and located inside the caverns.
Spiritual Significance and Mythology
Yana has a significant role in Hindu mythology and is more than just a geographical location. According to legend, this is where the demon Bhasmasura was vanquished. He was given the ability to burn anyone by touching their head. Bhasmasura was destroyed after Lord Vishnu, posing as Mohini, deceived him into touching his own head.
Yana’s mystical aura is attributed to the tall rocks, which are thought to symbolize Bhairaveshwara (Shiva) and Mohini (Vishnu). The Bhairaveshwara temple within the caves is still frequented by devotees today, particularly during Shivaratri, when lavish festivities are held.
Trekking to Yana Caves
One of the biggest attractions of Yana is its scenic trekking route. Surrounded by evergreen forests, chirping birds, and small streams, the path to Yana offers a rejuvenating experience. The trek is relatively easy, about 3–4 km depending on the entry route, and suitable for beginners.
During the monsoon season, the forest looks magical, but the paths can get muddy and slippery. Many times, entry is restricted during heavy rains for safety reasons. The best time to trek is October to March, when the weather is pleasant and safe.
